Project Goal: To contribute to the reduction of stunting rates of children under-five in Rwanda from 44% in 2010 to 24.5% by 2017 in accordance to the 2013 HSSP III.

Project Objective: To improve the nutritional status of under-twos and pregnant women, premised on the importance of the first thousand days (pregnancy through to two years of age) in combating stunting or chronic malnutrion through a coordinated and aligned multi-sector sectoral approach.

Project Summary: ADRA Rwanda will support the Government of Rwanda’s multi-sectorial efforts to fight malnutrition in all sectors of Gatsibo district over a period of 3.2 years starting from Nov. 2013. A total of 13 children under the age of two and 17360 pregnant and lactating women will benefit from the project. According to the most recent Rwanda DHS survey, 2010, the prevalence of chronic malnutrition (stunting) among children is alarmingly high at 55%. The program aims to tackle the crippling issue of chronic malnutrition b improving the nutritional status of under-twos and pregnant women, premised on the importance of the first thousand days in combating stunting through a coordinated and aligned multi-sector sectoral approach. The model the program is promoting aims to provide evidence that an effective combination of interventions can be delivered and brough to scale by government in conjunction with other local stakeholders.
